      Hi,

I’m new to this site but look forward to connecting with those who know more than I! I am in the process of building a 1″ Minnie Traction Engine. However, I have hit my first problem. If I slide the crankshaft gear centre onto the crankshaft I cannot manipulate the crankshaft in between its bearings even if I remove the bearings and try sliding through the holes in the hornplates. The width of the gear centre means that the shorter end on the crankshaft just fouls the top of the hornplate side. Any suggestions?

I cut a notch in the top of the left hand hornplate so you can slide the other end of the shaft into the R/H hornplate and then lower the other end down. Then put the bearing housings into place.

I did as Jason suggests but on both sides – it makes life easier during the very fiddly business of setting up the valve gear.

Hi, Thanks so much for that. I’d thought of doing that but it seemed a bit drastic as I could not find such a photo on any of the completed engine photos I looked at. Thought it was just me “missing something” that I’d done wrong …….. back to the workshop and thanks again.
