Evening folks, I have an Elliot mill and originally thought that either the oil nipples, or the tubes/ways, were plugged. I took the nipple off and see that it is a spring loaded device to stop oil back flowing out ( as in some cases the bearing is above the oil injection point). I have confirmed that in some cases my Draper oil gun cannot provide enough pressure to lift the spring loaded nipple. I've looked online and nothing I've seen seems to suggest the device is a pressure type oil gun. Any recommendations as to what I should buy?

        Thanks,

        Gareth

Sometimes you can get enough pressure out of an ordinary pump gun to push the spring back by sealing the nozzle to the surround with a piece of clean cloth laid between the nozzle and nipple. The oil will pump through a layer or two of not too thick cloth quite easily. Bit out of an old sheet or last stop for an old hanky perhaps.

I've seen schemes for complicated nozzles to use on ball oilers with an O ring seal on the outer sleeve and a pusher in the middle to move the ball back. Oil flows between outer sleeve and pusher.

If you don't mind taking the time to make something plans for the American style Eagle oilers can be found on the internet and also in a back issue of either ME or MEW. Doesn't look particularly difficult to make and, if carefully done, probably better than anything at an affordable price.

On my "to do" list with a selection of shaped output pipes to easily reach my hard to get at oiler selection.

Thanks for the prompt reply Clive. The problem does not seem to be a poor seal at the gun to nipple face as no oil leaks out when the gun is held firmly against the nipple. As the trigger operates fully, I presume that oil is slipping back past the piston in the gun.

I'll take a look at the eagle oiler.

            Thanks, G

Look at the Wanner telescopic hand guns. They work very well and have ends/adapters to suit most of the various oil/grease nipples that exist.

I use three of them for grease, way lube and bearing lube.

Gareth, have a look at this one from Press Parts **LINK** I have one for oil and it works well with only minimum leakage — I don't think there is a totally leak proof oil gun ???? but this is far better than another I have, well branded much more expensive than this as well.
