LOL, too modern for me!

But the Steve's Workshop website has these plans here **LINK** in metric for a simple oscillating engine that can be run on steam or compressed air. Build instructions are here **LINK**

His website (and the other one by Tom I posted) are both a great source of information for beginners (and not-so-beginners).

Given your interest in traction engines maybe the "Wells" traction engine which was used as a schools project would have more interest for you. I did use some simple castings that were cast at school but these could be made from solid or fabricated and the drawings are in metric. You should be able to download from this post and the casting pattern drawings from this one. You may need to join the forum to see the attached PDFs.

Also search the net for "Wells traction engine" or "schools traction engine" to see what it is like and find a couple of build threads

One of the High Schools in Christchurch NZ has run evening classes for many years making a similar traction engine to the one shown by JasonB.

Have a look at http://www.john-tom.com/html/ElmersEngines.html

Scroll down to no.12 and there you will find a simple turbine and centrifugal pump combination. You can make the pump without the turbine. The drawings and machining notes are a .pdf file.

Elmer's Turbine and Pump would be an excellent beginner project Dave, as would many of Elmer's engines on Jon Tom. However the OP complained before when someone suggested one of Elmer's engines because they weren't metric…..

…Even though 1" = 25.4 mm and calculators are not hard to come by.

….Even though #2-56 is very similar to M2, #4-40 is very similar to M3, #8-32 thread is very similar to M4, #10-32 is very similar to M5, etc.

No reason Elmer's simple plans with relatively few dimensions could not be easily converted to metric for one's build with just a minor effort.

Could make it a little bit bigger and use 1/32" = 1mm that way you will get mostly whole metric sizes.

As a beginner myself I'm finding a lot of the things I am interested in take a little searching, or research, or conversion into a useful scale or size. It's a great deal of the pleasure, not much is "on a plate".
