A quality aluminium alloy (for Myford castings) PRIMER?

      From chatting to an experienced vintage vehicle restorer, I’ve learnt that it’s difficult to get a good primer/key on aluminium alloys.

      As I want to repaint some castings from a Myford ML7, and whilst I know it’s not pure aluminium but some strange aluminium based alloy, please can others recommend primers for painting such alloys – surely there must be a reasonably straightforward process or product to get an excellent key?

          Try a supplier to vehicle refinishers. They can supply an acid etch primer that should do the trick.

            I used standard spray-can etch primer from the local paint shop on my ML7 with no problems.

            Etch primer is also readily available at local hardware stores, as it is also used for painting galvanized steel etc which is a common domestic building material.

                UPol Acid 8 etch primer or Halfords own brand equivalent are good for aluminium and brass. It goes without saying that getting the surface completely clean and degreased is essential for good results.

                      Also ask the maker of the finish and U/C you are going to use, not much point on applying a primer if it is not compatible with these.

                        Paragon paints supply primers and good advice. They also sell Myford grey and I believe green(?). Not the cheapest of paints, but superb quality finishes.
