      Some of you may recall that I posted a couple of images of a possible subject in the recent thread about developing a new series of engines here. Well I started playing around with that engine which had made use of some existing CAD parts and created one from scratch and this is the result.

      The frame, cylinder and flywheel were all 3D printed as one in 316 Stainless steel and the engine made while the paint was drying on my Whitehead engine detailed elsewhere. I won’t go into too much detail as I have said I will write it up for Editor Neil and don’t like people having to pay for something they have already read about for free so will let the video do the talking for now.

          I am expecting a little package via CraftCloud later this week containing an item printed in 316 stainless. I am trying to understand the material having only used 303 in the past. Did you have any problems machining the printed items and/or can you give any advise, please? I have downloaded quite a bit from Dormer (thank you for giving the link this morning) and the British Stainless Steel Association.

            These parts seemed a bit harder to machine that previous 316 stainless prints.

            The flywheel needed light 0.005″ depth of cut with a CCGT 060202, I still got some fine chatter marks while holding by the inside of the rim. Th esecond side was done in softjaws and that did not have the chatter so I flipped it back over and skimmed the first side. Speed was quite slow at around 300rpm again to stop chatter but the rim is quite  athin section so that may have been part of the reason. Boring went OK with the same inserts.

            Milling was not a problem with carbide, for what little there was to do I used a 6mm 4-flute from Xuhan via Aliexpress.

            Drilling was quite hard but doable with Dormer A022 split points

            All three of these I used a drop of neat cutting fluid

            Tapping M3 and M2.5 needed quite a bit of force using YG-1 spiral flute taps, I’d possibly go up a bit on tapping drill sizes. CT-90 tapping fluid used.
