ML7 help please!

The clutch on my ML7 (K11860) isn’t working. I reckon it just needs a small adjustment. To get to the relevant screw, I think I need to remove the motor drive belt guard? There seems to be a hexagonal nut at the back which I have loosened but there seems to be something about halfway up on the left hand end still holding the guard. It could be an Allen (Woodruff?) key? Would that release the guard? I can’t find anything to fit it. Any ideas on size/what tool to use? The illustration in the Myford booklet doesn’t provide detail of that area of the lathe.
I contacted Myford but they said they have no engineer who is familiar with the ML7 as it had been discontinued when they took over the business, so they have concentrated on the Super 7.

There was more than one type of clutch ! One was a cone clutch, another used raleigh moped brake shoes but I think there was a third type ? Which one do you have ? More info. Noel.

Yes there’s a ?3/16″ BSW? nut on a stud at the upper / back, and an Allen screw in a cast-in tubular lug on the lower run that is kind of hidden within the angle of the rear ‘shoulder’ of the gear cover – it needs a 3/16″ Imperial allen key.

It may be threaded into a ‘loose’ nut which you will need a spanner for (3/16BSW again I think), beware loose spacers / washers etc. falling out during disassembly.

You also need to remove the semi circular flat cover on the top right hand side of the belt guard, that’s usually 2 2BA countersunk flat head screws.

Hi everybody,

Thank you all so much for your help. I finally had time today to attack my lathe and the adjustment (a screw and locknut) took seconds. Everything is working as it should now. The tricky bit was getting the guard off and yes, there were two loose washers when I took the Allen screw out.

It might be worth checking whether that fastener is actually a grub screw rather than a Woodruff key. On older machines it’s not uncommon for covers to be held by a hidden grub screw that’s packed with years of oil and swarf, making it hard to identify.

I’d also avoid forcing the guard until you’re sure every fixing has been removed. Those original ML7 parts aren’t always easy to replace if something cracks or bends. Hopefully someone with the same model can confirm the exact fastener size.
