I have to change a 9.5 microfarad cap, but can only find 9 or 10 readily available. Which is preferable?

Check the tolerance of those capacitors.  They likely overlap.

either will do.  That size are often ±20%, and motors ain’t that fussy,   The important thing is that the replacement is a motor start capacitor.

Thanks. I had checked tolerance (5%), but that doesn’t help me resolve whether to go high or low;  it seems not too critical as a temporary fix of a 6 has the motor working again.

Go High but more important is the Voltage look for 400+ and 500V is good. Good luck . Noel

+/- 5% will make sod all difference to the phase or magnitude of the winding current, use either.  Or stick with 6!  Is this a cap start and run or just start, with a centrifugal switch?  If so and 6 works then stick with it.

It’s a pipe motor for a roller garage door. Very instructive to dismantle, but I can do it very quickly now. I’ll get a 10 as back up. Thank you all.
