hello everyone can somebody give me an opinion please….I may need to make some stepped studs to put right a fault on my dore westbury discovered whilst taking it all to bits.the studs would be 9/16 unc about 20mm long but continuing for another 30 mm at 12mm coarse thread. I would have to do this using dies rather than screwcutting tailstock die holder?at these sorts of diameters is this possible without screwcutting .and I assume a tougher steel than en1a ? many thanks

Hi Kevin,

I've cut up to 12mm threads with taps and dies on EN3B mild steel and both 20mm and 25mm external threads on electrical conduit, all by hand. Should be easy enough I would think as long as you can get enough of the stud to hold or clamp onto.

I have not looked up the root dia for 9/16" UNC, but with a bit of luck its over 12 mm, if so leave the metal for the stud uncut from the full bar, tap both threads from the small end, then part off, and if required finish the parted end.

Had a look, drill size for 9/16UNC is 31/64 .4844". 12 mm = .47244", so it can be done.

Why 9/16" UNC ?

Could it not be opened out to say M14 or M16 and start off with a length of studding ? This way you only have one thread to make.

Easy to offer advise if you don't know the whole story.
