      Is 10g C106 ok for 2" Minnie boiler?

          I have seen them done with 3mm so the extra thickness of 10swg will likely be OK but do check with your inspector first. Its also common to alter the tube layout rather than just double up the size of whats there.

            Hi Jason,

            I spoke to our inspector, I was going to use 18 10mm tubes. However he suggested to use 11 mm so as to minimise clogging up.

            Did you think 3mm was OTT ? .I know that you have said in the past that some items doubled up on the Minnie look " too chunky"

              No thats about the right thickness tube, 10swg x 5" is easy to get and the next easily obtainable would be too thin. You can't see the thickness of the boiler on the finished model so no issue with looking chunky

              Yes 7/16" tubes should be fine my 2" Fowler uses that size on a 4.75" dia boiler.

              I'd also go for hollow stays to fix the hornplates and use rivits for the rest of the smokebox side stays rather than Masons threaded stays. Leave the hollow stays over length and then they can be milled back true to the barrel so your hornplates sit nice and true.

                Worth remembering that the boiler barrel is part of the chassis of the engine and sees the road running loads as well as the more obvious steam pressure loads .

                I doubt whether this matters on a model engine run for demonstration on Tarmac but there is always the chance when running on a rough field of hitting something hard .

                The 3 mm tube may well be adequate for steam pressure but certainly better to use the 10g tube for a bit of belt and braces strength .

                  Jason & Michael,

                  Thanks for the info ,no doubt I will have a lot more questions as I hopefully progress not regress.

                  Initially started at the front end so axle,perch bracket,fork etc. complete so now the fun and expense begins smile

                  enjoying the steep learning curve so far, so different to using fabric,staples & scissors, but good fun
