Worth remembering that the boiler barrel is part of the chassis of the engine and sees the road running loads as well as the more obvious steam pressure loads .
I doubt whether this matters on a model engine run for demonstration on Tarmac but there is always the chance when running on a rough field of hitting something hard .
The 3 mm tube may well be adequate for steam pressure but certainly better to use the 10g tube for a bit of belt and braces strength .
