Hello, I have recently joined the site and am interested in the history from arround 1900 to 1956. In particular I am interested to find get copies of any articles written by my grandfather. His real name was William Blaney and he wrote about steam engines and model boats under the pen name of 'The Carpenters Mate' which was a reference to his father who was a carpenter and no doubt William helped in his work.

Did you try searching for "me index" at top right of the page?

              Hello Anthony and welcome.

All the best with you quest to track down articles by The Carpenters Mate. There are people on here sometimes who have old copies of M.E. for sale or to donate to a good home.

The carpenters mate was writing in the late 20's and maybe the very early 30's. As I recall some of his articles and letters were somewhat at odds with the main views of modellers at the time. I remember coming across these articles etc. when reading back numbers of the magazine a few years ago. I can't give any more accurate info. but if you can look at the indexes for these years you should be able to find him. |there used to be two indexes to every volume, one was a subject index the other was an author index.

There are some forty references to "W.Blaney" in the Model Engineer Index with a further twenty seven to "The Carpenter's Mate". They range from 1899 to 1957 with his death noted on 13 December 1956 at the age of 81.

                  Chris.
