        Hi Guys

I am well aware that this is a long shot and not typically workshop related however My workshop walls are adorned with industrial signs and company name plates. Babcock and Willcox. Metropolitan vickers etc etc etc.

Since starting this addictive collection I have bought quite a few. My latest was what I thought an interesting copper plaque with a logo at the top. As you can see the directors are mainly named Chadwick.

Would anybody out there by any slim chance have any knowledge or idea as to the signs history.

        Any help would be appreciated.

        Regards

The wife’s uncle worked in printing so this trade related item may be a long shot but worth a look.

What area did the sign come from? Have you tried "Glaces Guide" or companies house? With the key name Chapman OR Chadwick? Key is "To our friends of the Press". Printing connections?

                  Regards Ian.

DOH! I've done it now, GRACES Guide.

Ive tried graces guide. The sign was bought on EBAY and came from the Chichester area.

There is a lot of Chadwick references but I am struggling to get a definite connection to a company.

It was a long shot that somebody may have recognised the logo for something I was not familiar with.

                    Regards

                    Dave

Pretty likely it's Cobden Chadwick, as V8eng linked, makers of printing presses and ancillaries etc since 1905 or so. **LINK**

The tone of the wording seems like its pretty old. It's been a long time since any company gave that much of a rat's diddly about customer service. Make an appointment and talk to the managing director? Not likely in this century or the second half of the last.

My guess is Chadwick's were a News Agency.

A news agency depends on journalists bringing it stories, and journalists would want to negotiate top prices from one of the senior men. It fits the 'we love you as much as you love us' tone of the sign.

There are about 30 small news agencies running in the UK today. They mostly collect local news, but some specialise in sport. Rather than the press sending their Ace Boy Reporter to Bodmin on the off chance the Magistrates Court will have an interesting story, facts and pictures are collected locally and sent up the line.

The firm isn't in Graces Guide because they focus on Engineering.

Thats given me plenty of ideas for research.

That would explain the tone of the wording for sure.

Are there any agencies left these days other than PA and the big internationals like AP and Reuters? Even AAP has closed down in Australia.

The big boys like Reuters are best known but I found about 30 small UK news agencies currently advertising on the web. May be less call for them in Australia because we have more people packed into a much smaller space – standing room only and plenty of gossip! I suppose the internet isn't good for News Agencies either.

                                Thanks Dave

I have been struggling to find any definite links over the last few days. I think the chances of finding a definite connection will be pretty slim. Chadwick is quite a common name in Lancashire it would seem too.

The long shot was hoping somebody would recognise the logo. There is quite a few Mill owners Bleaching works etc etc. I was hoping there would be a link to one of these.

I won't give up just yet though as I am just too intrigued now.

                                Thanks for the help

If you do a birth search for the Chadwicks you will find that they could share a mothers name of Smith. If you then search birth location then that narrows it down the cheshire/staffordshire.

Assumptions are that they were born after 1911 if you use Mother's name appoach.

Just another idea for approaching your problem.

Try Companies House and look for old companies…

                                      Chadwicks (Liverpool) 1938

I'll let you search for the remainder of the 3,521 whose names don't start with 'Chadwick'.
