Good morning all,

I am about to fit a power feed unit to my milling machine.

The unit comes with a 110V plug unsuitable for our system, so needs to be replaced. The wires are black white green.

Which is the live, white or black ?

I suspect it is white, but just to be sure I decided to check

Umm… If it's a 110V plug, is a 110V motor? If so it might not be a good idea to just put a new plug on it, you would need a transformer too…

If it is AC, it does not matter which you connect to live or neutral, but US wiring uses black for live.

As John says, you need a transformer. A standard yellow building site one is cheap.

Yes John, it is a 110v motor, was ordered as such, so was fitted with a 110v moulded plug, just not the type we use., that,s why a new one has to be fitted. and I do have a transformer.

Bryan, I did notice the earth connection, I,m not that brave. I dont take chances, even with 110 v !

It’s a lazy and extravagant option, but adaptor leads are available to suit the yellow ‘site’ transformers:

A google search for :

iec 110v plug to american

should find one for around £25

That said, it’s only a five minute job to put an IEC plug on the lead.

I'm resisting the temptation, I really am trying, to enquire if that will need 'Arctic' cabling ? Oh, weak-willed again…….

I think it might need tropical cable at present or even sub sea cable depending on your location……… In fact an adaptor lead may be a very good suggestion, could have one for all seasons!
