Unusual electric motor – any use?

Someone at our club has passed on this motor. No idea where it came from but we suspect military. It is about the size of an old type car dynamo.

The question is can it be of any use or should I bin it now and save myself the trouble of trying to find a use for it?

I have a vague recollection, due to the name on the motor. That this is the type of motor used on the Bridgeport variable table feed.

If you have a 100V DC supply it would be very useful.

Your right Gray, the manual says .5HP Fracmo motor, armature 90 volts field 100 volts, full load current 4.6 amps. I think if the motor is OK its quite valuable. When my friend's Bridgeport had a fault we used a site transformer and a rectifier to eliminate the the power supply. John

That type of motor quite often used in CNC mills such as Denford (though not that make). Can be speed controlled from KBE type controller. If the brushes are in good nick (or can be replaced) it could be quite useful to someone.

Thanks for the info. We have obviously been looking in the wrong direction!

Presumably Bridgeports have a reduction transformer down from 415v?

My Cincinatti mill does.

I'll give the motor a look over with the multimeter.

Excellent find.

Good quality example of the common 1/2 hp 90 volt DC motor used for driving all sorts of things.

In our world, as previously mentioned, most likely to be found hanging off a Bridgeport 6 or 8 F table power feed with an Erskine controller inside the big box powered via a multi output transformer.

Generally very durable but prone to fill up with carbon dust when the brushes wear. Take appropriate precautions when looking inside or you will end up looking like a coal miner. I did!
