Brass insert

I have a need for a single M6 locking screw with a brass insert to stop it marring a shaft. I’d like to modify a SS cap head socket screw to match the existing ones on the job. Anyone done this? Thinking how best to get the brass insert concentric as from experience the heads often aren’t concentric with the thread.

Drill and tap a small length of bar in the lathe, mark chuck jaw to work alignment if not using a collet chuck.

Counter-bore the back to allow the screw to fit with the tip level with or proud of the front surface.

Flip around again and machine to accept your insert.

I read in MEW sometime back on the tips page of using a screw out of an electrical 13 amp plug,drill and tap the end of the bolt and locktite the screw in place.If the smalll screws aren't big enough there are plenty of larger brass screws that would fit the bill.

Done it a few times Vic for one offs and small quantity, same with grub screws.

Turn something larger dia than head drill and tap it M6 your case.
Screw Cap Head from inside out, may have to remove, might go back in central ish.

Just drill in to the screw undersize to a depth then back in again with size required.

Turn delrin or brass as required a decent fit and push in, job done.

If it was larger dia stuff you would go about it opposite doing the insert first and boring i/d to size, maintains concentricity being in one go.

I was thinking of chucking something larger in the collet chuck then putting the screw in from the back for drilling but was concerned it might unscrew unless I used a left hand drill bit and run in reverse? Worth a try though if I do it up tight enough and take it easy with the drill. Will give that a try.

Ahah, didn’t think of that! Only trouble is the bolt is only 10mm long. Counterboring as you say though may do the trick.
