Hi all.

I'm in the process of spraying my Simplex, I'm using Precision PAints (Phoenix), ready mixed aerosol cans. I bought three cans.. the first can seemed to go on ok, but the second and third cans (now applying the second coat), I seem to be getting air bubbles in the surface. If I'm quick enough I'm getting the bubbles out with my scalpel before the paint starts flashing off, but I'm getting really hacked off with it.

Any ideas from anyone why I'm getting these bubbles????

The coat is to thick by spraying too close to the surface or the temperature is too low? In both cases the propellant can't escape from the paint before a paint film has formed.

Each coat of paint should barely cover first the primer, then subsequent coats and continue that way until you have built up the finish you want, take your time, and don't worry about half a dozen coats of paint, it gives a depth of quality.

Yup light coats and not too close is the recipe. Hafta accept the waste from spray past.

Due to the relatively small size of a model its very easy to be sucked in to spraying from too short a distance with too little shift between sweeps. Double whammy. Too close means heavier than desirable coat and too little shift means even more paint on it. Even if it doesn't run you tend to trap propellant before its got out of the spray. Hence bubbles.

If you spray from the correct distance all the propellant should be out of the paint stream before it hits the surface. Too close and some will almost certainly be entrained.

I suffer from a lack of enthusiasm (and a steady hand) when it comes to painting models. In the next little while my loco should be completed and will need a paint job. At that point I will need to hire the services of a competent expert – if I can find one!
