Hi Guys

Found this item in a box of bits from a car boot sale.Has anyone got any idea what it is?.

The thin end rotates in a clockwise direction and locks anticlockwise and the 2 ends part push and pull apart and lock on the pins. It Is made by Charles Taylor Birmingham.

It looks like an arbor I have for a hole saw set. A pilot drill fits in the small hole and is secured by a set screw.

Hello John,

Charles Taylor were an engineering company that made metal spinning lathes and those very accurate 'pointy' faced lathe chucks with the taper scroll along with a lot more besides of an engineering nature.

I'll start the ball rolling by offering a one way clutch that might be used for fixed repeat position operation where matching of the output to previous operations is important, as in screwcutting for example.

This is a tap driver used on capstan lathes etc, drives forwards on the pins when machine gets to depth stop tap continues to drive in then pulls off drive pins the small end rotates freely as machine engages reverse it locks and tap comes out, they also make them for split dies as well.

For the info I am going to modify it to fit on the talestock of my lathe and use it for tapping.

If there is a cylindrical hole in the end with the logo I would bet it is a releasing tap holder for a screw machine or turret lathe.

Just picked up it’s sister I.e. the holder for dies to form male threads.
Exactly the same but with a die holder instead of the tap chuck.
