LBSC – PV Baker loco.

Hi, I have acquired some castings and boiler material for what I think is LBSC loco PV Baker but I am not certain.

I have checked the Model Engineer index and they say the loco was serialised in the 1945 series but on checking the content I am unable to find articles relating to this loco.

What I am looking for is a copy of the frame and boiler tube outline just to prove that this is the loco and then I can look at purchasing the plans.

I have the old frames but they are so badly made and are useless other than trying to identify the loco.

If anyone has a set of drawings for sale then I would be grateful.

How curious!

PV Baker is often quoted as being serialised in the 1945 MEs, but the actual serial at that time was Petrolea. In 1945 there were articles by him on piston valves and on Baker Valve gear for 3 1/2" gauge. PV Baker comes from "piston valve, Baker gear", perhaps only these items were published in ME?

Can anyone illuminate further?

Hi, P.V. Baker started in issue 2304 Vol 93 1945, and finished in issue 2305. It was headed by the title "Something to build on the quick"

Neil, LBSC said you thought P.V. stood for piston valve, but it was named after Patrica Violet Baker one of the girls in his munition shop.

Hi Paul,

These drawings from ME will hopefully help you to a positive identification.

It may not be widely known but the 'standard' type Baker valve gear always used by LBSC is not really suited to slide valves. The original design was for piston valves for which it works fine but it gives poor valve events with slide valves. There was a very peculiar arrangement of Baker gear specially designed for slide valves where the combination lever is actually behind the gear frame.

Yes,

It was definitely one of LBSC's 'quickies'. The only drawings in the mag are for the frames and the boiler. The rest you had to work out for yourself by refering back to earlier articles, which is ok if you've got them. Presumably the full size drawings had more detail? Don't know who sells them now.

Yes,

The Baker valve gear was in Vol.92 Issue 2283 and the cylinders in Issue 2294.

Hi Paul, I too have been trying to track down drawings for PV Baker, with the idea of selling what I have. I accquired a running chassis from an estate,. Very unlikely I will do anything more with it. Too many more interesting projects on the go.
