Please can anyone with experience of transporting a model locomotive with a small single axle trailer advise how best to minimise damage to the loco.

Are some trailers better than others?

The guys at our club make track out of wood with buffers at one end that are fixed. They put the loco on and fasten there drag link to the fixed end. This stops it moving back and forth. Then at the loose end they drop a wooden block in which prevents movement .they then put a cloth over the boiler and stretch a couple of spiders over the top. Of course the wood is fixed to the trailers base. Seems to work well.

No experiance of locos, but plenty of similar things. The small trailers available all over with galvanized body and rubber suspesion are pretty good for the price, hard to make one cheaper. A drop-down tailgate is a must to me, makes loading so much easier. Some have very short drawbars , this makes reversing difficult. Put tyre sealer in the wheels and get a spare !.Make a good timber box that can be fastened to the floor. I would clamp the machine down, maybe from its chassis, esp' if it's sprung. Don't forget a good hard cover for the trailer, and a tow hook lock.
