I love machining things and I love all things steam. Ive made a few locos, beam engines, many boilers, couple of stuarts and am well into a 71/4 gauge invicta. The thing is that no matter how much I try to kid myself, locos just dont do it for me! I want to build (and design) a decent sized static engine, boiler, pumps etc so it can do some actual work – do you think im losing the plot??

Welcome to the dark side, you are not the only one that Locos don't do anything for.

The steam ones I can just about bear but sitting astride a fibreglass box with an old lawnmower engine beneath does not get me excited.

I also love all things steamy, especially locomotives. On the other hand I have no desire whatsoever to run them on a track or be pulled around by them, preferring to run and admire them on a rolling road. Not too different to a static engine really. Scenic railways seem like a lot of hard work to build and even harder work to maintain.

Bob Symes (of Tomorrow's World) used to have a small steam engine that powered a saw that cut wood to fire the boiler to power the engine that ……..

                    Mick H,

I like scenic railways too – Gauge '3' ones (2.5" gauge) but I don't have my own garden railway.

Fortunately some of my friends (other G3 Members) do! So "Scenic Railway = Need Big Garden and/or to Build Own Track" is an incorrect assumption. It should not be the first issue (or barrier) when thinking about building an engine in G3. Also true in G1 & 16mm I would think.
