Anyone know the thread of the screws which secure the jaw plates on a record 30 quick release vice? They heave quite a fine thread ( I['m guessing imperial?) and a taper to the screw head. Slots on mine are a bit knackered (not me got it 2 years ago) and I want to replace the jaws with aluminium so might as well fit new screws at the same time.

        Cheers Ian

Why replace the jaws? You can get a whole new vice here for only £821 crook

              Hello Ian,

I've checked my 4 inch Record, those jaw screws are 1/4 inch Whitworth 20tpi with 3/4 inch of thread under the countersunk head. I would imagine the makers standardised on that size for the whole range of vice sizes, why do otherwise?

As for podding out £800+ on a new vice, surely a joke!!

              Regards Brian

Certainly in my case (hence the smiley). I believe the seller is serious though.

Sorry, which planet did you say they were on? But I expect solid gold is cheaper there.

                            Hi Brian

Sadly they may have standardised NOW but the ones in this one are 1" long, 26 tpi and almost a square form thread (?) with a large degree of taker under the head for the first 1/4". The diameter ( to top of thread) is 302 thou.

                            BSF perhaps?

I should add they were certainly put in never to be removed without considerable effort ! Mine have now been extracted, copper slipped and reinserted.

Until I extracted them and compared to the ones shown as a spare available now, I was going to bite the bullet and order a set of jaws etc ( £50 !!!) but they're totally different.

I have e mailed record to see what their view is and will update this when I know.

Made me feel a bit better when I saw the same vice on ebay for £170! Mind you you have to go and collect it. Just about gave me a hernia when I picked mine up !

                            Thanks one and all

                            Ian

The threads are apparently 312 thou diameter, 26 TPI BSW free fitting! So cays the IRWIN tools technical helpline!

Now I've just got to source some. Or make some perhaps and case hardenindecision

.312 = 5/16", 26 TPI is 5/16" UNF, not BSF which is 22TPI, Whitworth is18 TPI, so I don't know what Irwin Tools are talking about, or maybe they don't.

                                Ian, your 1/4 x 26TPI screws are BSF.      Ian S C

Got one of these years ago when ELF and SAFETY decided to have our metal working shop shut down, if I remember it originally cost around 15.00. another thing was a very large anvil on a stand a few years before this they decided to instruct us that the point must be removed as a student might impail themself. (God there were a few that I would have happily stuck them on backwards) now back to the plot will take mine apart and measure it.

I have a record No 5 vice of some considerable vintage. The screws that hold the jaws are 5/16 BSW by 1 inch total length, countersunk.

I got my replacements from EmKay Screw Supplies (WWW.emkaysupplies.co.uk) at a very reasonable cost and quick delivery. I bought the 1 1/4 long screws and cut them down.

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to add the following info in case anyone is searching in the future.

I have two record 36's at the moment and the older one with 'steel' on the side has a 5/16 BSW 18 TPI thread holding the vice jaws on. The newer one seems to use something like and 8mm x 1mm pitch thread, it certainly isn't a 24tpi or 26 tpi thread, I've checked against the old screw and the replacement sent with the new jaws I have bought.

Hi, as far as price go's for a new T36 Record vice, it is no joke. These are designed for industrial use and incorporates an anvil. plus quick release. Both Cromwell Tools and Buck and Hickman have as similar price to the one linked in the above post. See **LINK** and **LINK**
