Is it still possible to get non Myford (say Lorch) bedways reground? Does anyone have information on companies that have the knowledge, experience and tools to regrind 40 yr old lathes?

      Regards
      Ian

This company may no longer be in existence.  The ad. was in a 2003 ME – 4199.  No www address given which doesn’t bode well.  I believe they would not have been far from our esteemed editor’s former environment and he may have more up-to-date information.

            Hi There
I worked at Holton Heath and never saw that company.
The only one I remember in Poole was KLJ machine tools I think.

Again they don’t seem to be in exstence.
            regards David

Google lathe bed regrinds. There are some 10 pages of contacts (various  -some refer to articles).

KMZ near Exeter look as if they might be worth a ring.

Try Brian Caddy of unislide grinding co ltd. At Nuneaton tel 024 7634 0068. If he’s still in business.

Thanks everyone for the comments so far. As you probably guessed, neither Lexter Machine Tools or KLJ seem to be inexistence anymore although the business’s could be running under another name. Googling obviously does come up with a lot of information but provides no answers, if it had, I wouldn’t be answering the question. KMZ doesn’t come up at all. Thanks Ian for the connection to Unislide Grinding. Brian Caddy has since left but I spoke to Tony Clark of Clark Machinery the parent company of Unislide. He tells me that they can do bedway regrinding but they have no dimensional data for this particular Lorch, I would have been surprised if they had, Anyway it’s a good lead which I shall be following up.

I literally bumped into Brian Caddy at his grinding machine by mistake. After introductions I left my lathe with him for regrinding. Two days later it was ready for collection with the bed ground and the apron skimmed for positioning of the lead screw. The bed has the inverted V so is more complex than say a Schaublin or Myford. So far I am very impressed with the work but it will not be until final assembly that I will be able to document the results. Brian started his own business, Slideway Services Ltd, 02476 327874 or http://www.slidewayservices.co.uk.

Does anyone have a rough idea of the cost to regrind a lathe bed. I would like to get my 13 X 30 C8C lathe bed reground? How do they compensate for the saddle sitting lower after grinding with reference to the leadscrew?

                        Paul.

Paul i have heard advertising on similar machine sizes ie M300 at £800. Personally i wouldnt trust with a barge pole, theres grinders and theres grinders. 20 odd year ago full regrind puka job ok for Rolls on an ML7 over a grand.

A decent grinder wont need dimensional data, they calculate first then machine. Other parts are then machined to suit.

The only realistic way to get the price down is to skimp in certain areas, quality costs.
