      Hi

Does anyone know if the Zeus data booklet is available as pdf download. A google search takes me to sites that ask me to create an account before I do anything and ebay just lists the booklet itself. I'd happily pay the price of the booklet for the pdf file.

I suspect the Zeus book is copyrighted so if a PDF is around it will be an infringement of that copyright, if you buy a copy I don't think there is any reason you could not make yourself a pdf of the book as long as you have access to a scanner and for personal use only.

There's also the excellent Engineers Black Book which is stuffed with info.

Watch out for those dodgy PDF download sites. Beside not paying copyright, many of them are scams that do not have what they promise but harvest your data, send you malware and go on their merry way.

PDF download rather defeats the purpose of a Zeus book. Its whole raison d'être is that its pretty much mark prof and fits in the top pocket of your overalls and is always to hand.

PDF printouts on grubby paper just don't hack it.

There are far better compendiums to use as a main data source on the computer or as printed out pages for what you need right now.

If you want to build up a reasonably compact, mark proof, compendium to keep on the bench I suggest an A5 loose leaf folder filled with transparent wallets to hold the data printouts. Not too big to open on the bench and, unlike a conventional book, it stays open when left. Alternatively you can get spiral wire bound "books" full of transparent wallets which are, maybe, better but somewhat spendy. Way back I took Howard Halls data sheets out of MEW, clipped them in half and slipped into transparent wallets filling a pair of cheap A5 twin ring binders binders out of Woolworths. Look good, work well but I've pretty much never used them in anger. Got other ways that do me just fine. Old dawg, new tricks 'n all that.

As I've mentioned before its way past time this copyright and internet business was sorted with effective file tracking so copyright holders get paid and universally low download pricing so folk can hoover up what they want without feeling guilty. Do the maths. The actual information, intellectual property and whatever in the book has always been near valueless. What you pay for is the cost of making the book and getting it out into you hot little hands.

                Clive.

Thanks for the replies. I've been given the job of designing and making a burner manifold for an eternal peace flame for the village. I'm trying to figure it all out in CAD and it has numerous metric and UNF screw threads and it would have been nice to have the screw thread data that's in the Zeus book on my PC.

Gosh – I have two Zeus books in the workshop – a 1980 one that I use all the time and a 1995 one that I bought as a spare. I've just bought the 1995 one in and see that the table of BA thread data has been replaced by a metric fine one. What's the world coming to?

The charts I attached in the thread called "Model Engineering Threads" can be printed 'cos they are 300dpi. It contains exactly the data you need.

                                  Otley,

A perfectly legit download of useful drill, tapping, milling etc is available from Presto Drills Sheffield.
Go to the web site and look at the bottom of their download list for Presto Councellor. It used to be available as a booklet but now seems to be print your own and laminate if you want a workshop copy. Almost as good as Zeus!!

Cromwell Tools' Engineers Reference Pocket Book is worth a looks for the price as well; unfortunately it doesn't cover ME threads.

Hi, the Counsellor download in this **LINK** may be of interest, it is a bit more British and it has B.A. threads in it.

                                        Regards Nick.

P.S. Didn't notice Bob D had already mentioned it.

Keep your eyes open at secondhand book stalls and shops for old engineering books, i have picked up some real bargains over the years. I bought a banana box full of 1950's/60's engineering books a few years ago, and i think i paid about the equivalent of £25 for them. Not knowing that i would find them, i had no way of carrying them home, so had to lumber them to the bus stop. Did not care though, it was like christmas come early.

After reading this thread I ordered the 'black book' and it arrived today. I must say what a gem of a book so much more than the Zeus even if some of the writing is on the edge of my vision focus. Definitely a worthwhile buy.
