          Hi Bill,

It sound like ordinary gears vs. true worm gears.

Both will work, especially in such a relatively lightly loaded, slow moving situation, but to fully engage and work well the ordinary gears neeed to be canted at the helix angle of the gear which is awkward for your application. The proper matched worm gears will fit bets.

The proper worm with the concave sloping teeth will be best and is what the Robey tandems had on their quadrant, Fudging it with straight gears on a small model will be helped by the fact that the steering shaft did slope up at an angle though not enough to match the helix angle.

They can be free hobbed using a tap in the lathe chuck and a worm screwcut to suit.
