Living in a semi-rural area it is quite worrying to us that the Police no longer respond to certain incidents.

I don't know how many of you are Townies & think us all stupid interbreds, but there's some very clever folk living in t'village.

A long retired inspector offered the whole village his advice that the Police prioritise incidents according to the information you give them on the call . . . So don't give them that info. If you just ring 999 & whisper "come, come quick" then put the phone to one side, you will have every available officer running from the canteen & outside your door before the scrotes manage to get far

Good quality locks, any padlock under £50 isn't worth using, minimum 5 lever mortice locks, 7 lever are better. Steel doors and very heavy bars on all windows.

If the building is wooden, the best answer is steel reinforcing mesh screwed on all the walls and ceiling.

I know supermarket cash rooms have expand metal mesh screwed to all surfaces before plastering.

Don't rely on them being caught stop, the buggers getting in is the best answer.

One of my shipping containers has been attacked 4 times and they still haven't got in yet!

          Scout hut near Bath:

Ropes and a 4×4 used in an attempt to pull the door open, instead the front wall came off. Another bunch of idiots in Yate attempted to remove an ATM machine by filling the room behind with gas by passing a hose through the letterbox and exploding it. That also resulted in the front of the building collapsing…

Doing enormous damage for trivial returns while risking a jail sentence seems gormless to me. My spies tell me most of this truly stupid stuff is done by teenagers and very young men who soon grow out of it. I worry more about long-term wrong-uns like Milosovic, Putin, Blatter, Mugabe, bin Salman, Banks, Zuma, & Trump etc and why they all have so many supporters happy to look the other way…

It has crossed my mind that a burgler alarm fitted with a GWR 5 tone whistle, fed from a substantial air receiver might be fun. devil

A piezo siren inside the shed might be quite devastating, but I'm sure I'd be the one to trigger it in a forgetful moment crook

My grandad apparently often caught the trip wire and set off the 12-bore cartridge alarm he'd set up in the farmyard, when he went outside after dark to check the livestock teeth 2

I never actually said that I have a dog. What I did say was that I use something rather more subtle than the useless beware dog sign. Rattle/kick gate test, no reaction then dog out for walkies or doesn't exist.

My regular rogue visitor came at least twice a week, presumably checking, hoping I might forget to lock up one day. It all stopped after my additional precaution installed. This was some 50 yr old brainless idiot employed as a security officer! I knew him, lived in next road and his relative next door was able to say coast is clear, seen target (me) go off to work today.

Local clay pigeon club, kit secured in what we thought was the best we could do . Semi rural area. Scumbags cut their way Into the container and made off with £10k worth of traps. Local police, crime number issued and no more . Zero chance of solving crime so not worth attending.

Partly for security, (and because i would only put shelves across them), my shop has no windows. The walls are wooden but the 50mm cavity is glass fibre filled. The door is a fire door with a 6 lever lock, and i have fitted home made hinge bolts. To access it would require climbing either a 2 metre high gate or two 1.7 metre high fences.

The problem is, as already said, the loons who cause thousands of damage and then take nothing or only small value items, ie smash their way in to find that the pair of them can't carry the lathe!

I like the story about the couple who came home to find their Staffie bitch growling over a lot of someone's trousers, while the pups played with the owner's wallet! We had a Staffie, a wonderful family pet and companion, but God help anyone who even thought of molesting any of the family!

"You were injured? Were you there legally?" " No", "You brought it on yourself. Next!" ought to be the conversation.

Clay pigeon clubs are a favourite for travellers out to make easy money, the kit is pretty expensive and appears easy to move on. Club premises are by their definition in locations away from neighbouring properties and therefore easy targets where they won’t be disturbed, our club lives in fear of a visit but so far we have been spared. Unlike your domestic workshop difficult to protect with security measures, probably the easiest to incorporate are the blank 12 bore cartridges triggered by tripwires, something I have considered for my own workshop, it doesn’t stop a break in but guaranteed to frighten the s—-t out of a perpetrator.

My story, got a phone call at work some acehole had smashed our up & over garage door to get at a £2.5k MX bike, alarm went off, and acehole ran away.

Week later, 4.30am alarm went off, said acehole had returned & gained entry through the garage back door, alarm went off & he ran away again.

Front garage door replaced, rear door metal sheeted up, CCTV fitted

Month later, myself, my wife & youngest daughter having evening meal when we heard strange noises out the front, I ran to investigate and was amazed to see a Black golf had rammed the new garage door & acehole was inside. Although I’m 64 the adrenaline kicked in & maybe luckily I didn’t have a weapon to hand as I challenged acehole & said acehole ran off with his mate driving the golf.

We gave police the reg # but it is a criminal’s pool car so nothing they could do.

New garage door fitted, anti-ram raid bollard fitted although bike has now gone.

Altogether a very stressful & costly few months, moral is you can keep your gear & you aren’t dealing with logical people or clever people!

You can get sonic generators that induce nausea and also harmless rapid smoke generators that mean the thieves can't see to steal – possibly moe practical than cctv. When we had our spate of troubles wifey kept a large volume kiddies water-pistol handy charged with indellible brilliant green dye.
