Google your town for woodwork / turning /carving club /society. Likely that someone will be happy to make one for you and possibly in exchange for a metal bit for one of his projects.

Unless you are set on Oak I can supply a piece of American White Ash or strips of Western Red Cedar left over from my kayak and canoe build.

Just had another thought. Try looking for a local sign maker as house signs and nameplates are about that size. If in Devon try Notice-it in Topsham. Only thing is the lead up to Christmas is busy for them as a people think of easy presents.

Try a kitchen fitter who often rip outdated oak units and the doors are ideal pieces of timber.

I've used chopping boards from the local supermarket in the past.

Tesco's granite ones make excellant flat surface tables too.

Oak is quite acidic to the extent of tending to rust steel screws used as fixings so be aware if you do use that. If the engine base is directly in contact then a good sealing of shellac and wax or varnish should protect your engine.

                                  regards Martin

In Canada/US you can get finished bases from a decent handicraft store such as ' Michaels. Surely there are similar such stores in the UK which might supply one?

                                      Thanks for the offer Derek

I said oak as I needed a light colour but any light / yellow colour would do as engine is black.

I have no woodworking skills or equipment so was looking to buy a finished base.

Would have happily paid up to £20 for a bespoke one..

Bill I will have a look to see what other wood I have. I definitely have Oak if you want that just for postage. I can cut to size and finish.

But as stated above Oak can play effect metal if both are left bare due to the Tannin in it. I turned some wet Oak once and had to clean the lathe straight afterwards and even then the metal started turning black.

Check Ebay there are numerous sizes of finished plinths suitable for mounting models.
