      Hello,

Can't find an artcle where writer was making acme/trapezoidal srew and made a tap (to make nuts) on the same go. It is the making of the tap that mystifies me most. Not having a TCG and all.

I'm pretty sure I saw this article some time ago when I was looking something else, but can't find it on HH index or on my pile of MEW mags.

Found only this on HH index (not what I was looking for!):

171   48   LATHE WORK A BEGINNERS COURSE6   SQUARE AND ACME THREADS          M   BRYMER

My long term project is to make a cross slide and considering buying normal RH 12 – 16 mm OD, 3 – 4 mm lead trapetzoidal screw and nuts to go, but I'm also looking for an alternative ways to make some.

I need LH for a cross slide (if I go there…..) and RH for a compound. I just got thinkking that if I have 2.5mm lead on cross slide, 4mm lead on top slide might feel funny and make thimbles pretty big.

      Help opinions greatly appreciated.

      Thanks,

      Pekka

          Hello Pekka!

Using MEW_Index free application  ***LINK***  applying the word “thread” as criterion for the title field, I find 50 articles. If I use the criterion “acme” in the keywords field I find 2 articles.
I think the article you are looking for is one of these two.
Year: 2002; Issue: 82; Author: Loader; Title: Screw Threads are not just for Fastening; Keywords: Square threads Acme Buttress Multi start
Year: 2010; Issue: 171; Author: Brymer; Title: Lathework, A Beginners' Course Part 6; Keywords: Square Acme and Multiple Start Threads

In case you are interested in the 50 other articles, please send me a personal male and I'll send the list to you.
Alternatively I can post only the issue number for the 50 articles.

          Best regards
          Dias Costa

            Thank you,

But it was neither! If my memery serves right the article was not about threading, but it had instructions how to make trapezoidal thread tap and I think it was sort of lead screw application. Damn! I should have bookmarkked or write it down or printa page or something!

I'll be checkking the indexes and try to fing it out.

Found it! I went on reading top slide designs and found it just by pure chance.

              182 28 A new topslide with high-resolution angular readout (2)

Actually that is 3rd instalment of that series. It had details on one method to make fluted acme tap, but it needs Quorn or such….I think I'll pass it for now and look alternative ways.

Tracy Tools sell ACME form taps and dies, could save you a lot of work

From memory I think it was an article about making a left-hand ACME thread and nut for a scale GWR screw reverser.

If not, I think Wile E. Coyote may be able to help you find a supplier.

Nothing else but haples charcter chasing running avians comes into my mind. And ACME-brand rocket apparatus.

Is "GWR screw reverser." some loco-stuff?

Chekked Tracy Tools and ACME taps looks affordable, definately something to keep in mind, but metric one (trapezoidal) didn't seem to readily available "TRAPEZOIDAL TAPS – PLEASE TELEPHONE FOR AVAILABILITY"

Probably will buy a insert and tool-holder or try to make one ground HSS-variety with adjustable lead angle (left/righ) for outside thread, but under 16mm tap would be nice.

                      Thanks, Pekka

                        Sorry,

a GWR screw reverser is indded a valve-reverser for a steam locomotive which uses a left-hand acme thread.
