Hi David, assuming they are cast iron wheels and if they were mine, I would open them out a enough to get a reasonable piece of cast iron to give a signifcant wall thickness when you have the right size hole in it. I would also use Loctite 638 for retaining the bush in the wheel.

          Regards Nick.

Use a cast iron bush if the wheel is free on the axel, if it is to be fixed tight , use a steel bush, and either way, do as above and use loctite. Ian S C

I have a book by Martin Evans- The model steam locomotive. For me its a bible as i have no experience in building loco's. The loco in my avatar, i bought and rebuilt.

I usually draw anything that i am going to make in 3d to check things are going to fit. I drew the axles and a wheel up for 5" as described in his book as i want to build a riding trolley to run behind the loco in my avatar.

The 'land' for the wheel to sit on is 11/16" long and 11/16" diameter.

The wheel is 11/16" bore and 0.535" wide – i think?

When drawn up, the axles stick out of the wheels. So my question is: Are the wheels for standard loco's in 5" guage all different widths or are they all 11/16" wide?

              Brian

                  Hi Bri,

Tubal Cain gives 0.535" as the standard width for 5" gauge in his handbook. In practice I understand the back to back dimension is the most critical, then the flange width.

                    Hi ,

On full size engines details of dimensions of wheels varied all over the place in the early days .

Later on the back to back dimension was standardised for British engines at 4 ft 5-5/8 in .

Tyre width though continued to vary from company to company – anything from 5 in to 5-3/4 in on proper railways and almost anything on industrial ones .

Thickness of wheel hub , amount of inset / stand out of hub centre and actual details of axle ends varied from railway to railway and era to era .

Proper railways had flanges nominally 1-1/8 in thick by 1-5/8 in deep but with a complex taper plus curves profile .

Wheel treads were coned slightly primarily to reduce lateral hunting when running at speed and to some extent to ease travel around curves .

There never really was a completely standard set of dimension for wheels in full size and therefore no reason to have one on models .

                    Regards ,

                    MikeW

Ok thanks for the replies. I have to assume the axle drawings are incorrect at11/16 land length or the extra is an allowance for machining off back to the face of the wheel.
