After 11 months I have finished the i/c rockerblock engine, designed by Brian Rupnow. All that remains is to wait for the thread lock to set on the tank feed and tomorrow i'll try to start it.

Once must be careful when starting a post with ' I Finally completed my XYZ thingy…'.!

Some post back I showed my 'finally' completed stepperised rotary table/Hobber and the electronic controller I made for it.

The controller did angle steps, division steps , continuous rotation and a hobbing mode. And that was done…

What controller are you using Joseph? I'm sure you have mentioned that in the past, but I can't remember which family it was!

T'was the NUCLEO-446 – an ARM Cortex based STM 32 bit processor. The Nucleo board is an ARDUINO look-alike and costs around $8.00 US. Part of the board is a USB based Programmer to load the code – this part can be snapped of to leave just the main board. Base clock is 8MHz with an internal PLL that can multiply clock by up to 20X

I use this in all my machine applications; the Shaper NC update, both lathes ELS feed controllers, even in my Wife's Cheese curing chamber for temp and humidity control!

Spent nearly an hour setting up some 0.016 brass to drill a line of 1/32 holes and then found that the drill didn't reach the metal!

Oh well, I'll try again today.

Made two buffer housings today, machined from solid 25mm MS bar. Two more to go then i can start on the buffer heads, but tomorrow and Tuesday are both full up so will have to wait until Wednesday frown.

Yesterday finally got round to machining new pallet for my recreation of a Synchronome clock (see previous post on making the bob here.

                pallet_1.jpg

                pallet_2.jpg

Upper photo is the brass pallet and slotted collet. The pallet profile was cnc milled with code generated to form the "ideal" profile described in Frank Hope-Jones' book on Electric Clocks. All the calculations and g-code done in an Excel spreadsheet. Many hours of working out, about 5 minutes machining. The two M4 holes were to clamp the brass blank on to a composite backing clamped to the mill table, the big hole in the collet is 10 mm, the pallet made from 1/8" brass. Still need to do a bit of trimming and deburring, solder the pallet into the collet, and clean it up.

It's now tomorrow and I've managed the setup. Drilled about 200 holes, spaced using my DRO, without breaking a drill!

I've just caught the drill on the sleeve of my jumper and broken it!

Slight diversion today from the normal stuff this is an extra long poker for a friend who finds it difficult to bend down to poke his log burning stove. This should do the job! it's 1/2" square hot rolled mild steel, the handle is a piece of pine scrap sandwiched between two black Acetal end caps. Topped off with a brass finial and circular hook. Hope its not too heavy!

Made a flat screen guard I have been going to make for ages. I have had the spare mag base since leaving work and the piece of lexon so just a shaft and clamp and a hand knob I already had. Just a useful piece of kit when fly cutting etc.

I'm a firm believer these are the best guards you can have because being so easy to set up there is no excuse not to use one.

How does the plastic stand up to blue chips? Do they bounce off or do they melt it and stick?

Acrylic is less likely to scratch, but polycarbonate is tougher and less likely to shatter. I think my main one is polycarbonate. I've recently recovered some 5mm acrylic from a display cabinet to make a big one though.

                                        Hi All,

Just made these two large bolts for an antique book press that was fiitted with riser blocks so the bolts were too long.

                                        dpress 3.jpg

                                        dpress 6.jpg

This was my first attempt at a serious thread 7/8" by 9tpi, 36mm AF and it did not go without incident!

I decided to cut both threads using either end of a single bar; the first one went absolutely fine and I was very pleased at how easy it was!

Turned the bar around and did the scratch pass into the dykem and checked the pitch just to be sure. Started taking 5 thou cuts in back gear.

Halfway through the next cut or so I got distracted and turning round I must have caught the cross slide and accidentally wound on 15 more thou! Result was a big bang and my Tufnol tumbler gear disintegrated! Wrecked the HSS cutting tool also.

Got a new one a couple of days later and installed it. Everything else had been left exactly as it was so I carefully did a blank no cut run to see that the alignment was all OK.

At this point my brain deserted me as I reset the next cut at 2 thou to check alignment again TOTALLY FORGETTING that the disaster happened halfway along the work and I should have started the check cut at the high point to the left of the previous cut!

YUP, another bang and wrecked tool and tumbler gear!

Walked away in disgust for a day or two when someone on here very generously lent me a gear so I could finish the job while waitng for a new one. ( Thanks Brian! its on its way back to you!)

Some serious lessons learned and finally got it done.

I am now the owner of what must be the two most expensive bolts ever! blush

                                        Cheers, Martin

I got my rockerblock i/c engine running. It fired continually with the drill but wouldn't run ,I thought I would run it on the drill to bed everything in,whilst doing this I noticed bubbles coming from a head screw.I removed all of the screws and spread hermatite on the screws and reffited them, after adjusting the jet to nearly closed it ran and continues at every start up.To say I am chuffed is an understatement.

A job I should have done years ago, but finally making this metal rack was triggered as a result of having to go through a whole heap of metal to find the 20mm Sq mild steel I knew I had somewhere. In looking for that I came across a huge amount of Brass, Bronze and Ali that I had forgotten I hadblush

They look beautiful. What was the material like before machining? presumably moulded and oversize but by how much.

You jig to hold the part machined part must be quite clever too, how will they be attached to the boat?
