Hi Raymond, how much frost are you getting? We'v had a couple of -7*C here, and quite a few around -5*C, frosty nights, clear days, barometric high, rain again in a couple of days. Ian S C

Dinner yet again ( best Forrest Gump voice )
Had about 15 types of mushrooms and a dish of spring onions and baby bees.

Honest – took a pic and sent it to Neil

You'd better watch out for all those "free lunches" John. At this rate you will be too heavy for the plane and will have to return by sea!

( Or I suppose, if you had bees, maybe it wasn't a free lunch and they stung you for it !)

Joking apart it is a problem as these big lunches and drinking bottles of rice wine which is 40% proof is expected and any refusal is classed as an insult, so I hope you guys appreciate the effort I'm putting in for you cheeky

One thing I can say after going round these factories which in no way are sweat shops is that literally millions of pounds has been invested to produce a quality product.

And after seeing shipping docks at these factories with goods for all over the world don't believe the company name on the box.

A year ago I bought a load of OO railway bits of ebay. I've laid out half of a complex track layout on a 4×6 board, but dodgy points and the realisation I don't actually have anywhere to put it halted progress.

Thanks to the miracle of flexi-track, I how have an oval on a 2' x4' base in my workshop with a Midland Railway 0-4-0 hauling six trucks and a brake van round like a jogger in the park. I'm going to hide 60% of the oval with scenery and put a 'shunting puzzle' goods yard in the middle. At least that's the plan,. although sitting here listening to continual flange grinding…

P.S. now got Flying Scotsman doing the honours… it sticks out by about an inch on the corners! Shall I add a rake of coaches?

What I would like to have done, is to put a cabinet back together, but I need a couple of dozen #6 x 3/8 pan head sheet metal screws. All the usual suspects do BZP and Black finish, but I need plain zinc (ie dull grey).

                      Any ideas?

Pottered on with a couple of jobs off my 'toduit list' added an extended front jaw to my bandsaw with a jackscrew fitted. The rear jaw was slotted out an extra 5mm to allow it to also sit closer to the blade.

Digi vernier height gauge mod…the original dial version had a lot of slack on the rack & pinion, in effect BER so got a cheap vernier from a well known German supermarket & converted to make a 6" height gauge…

                              Good grief Michael !

Never mind modeling the mechanics of these beam engines – how about painting to scale on the columns!!!

In my youth – (back when Adam was a lad and I could see) – I had a spell of military modeling – mostly painting in the greatest detail possible the uniform details on models of Napoleonic era soldiers. I recall using a 000 sized brush. I think this would be an easy task compared with the beam's columns!

Steve, shiney screws are just new. Leave them outside for a while and they will go dull. Another method is to get plain steel and paint with phosphoric acid rust treatment. which will give it a grey antil corrosive finish. Been getting this unintentionally on some parts today I left too long under treatment.

Mechman – I just picked one of those up today and stripped it for derusting. Been looking at mikesworkshop website for modification ideas.

Put a final coat of paint on my first attempt at ironwork. 3/4" square tube and flats. Diamonds cut from 2" square tube. The wife likes it. The four sides are detachable to make it easier to store for the winter.

Yesterday, despite a lingering head cold, I visited a newly opened shop that the owner calls a junk shop. I picked up a few useable items and a couple of curios. I found these pliers amongst several dozen sets. The replaceable jaws caught my eye. A bit unusual. $3 CAD

I found this J Whitworth thread chaser with 3/16 chasers installed. $8 CAD. There is obviously something missing that adjusts the two moveable chasers against the fixed chaser. Something, perhaps a parallel wedge affair was used. Can someone help or comment on the missing part(s)?

                                          George,

I made a similar mod to the vice on my bandsaw, in my case there is an effectively functionless jaw plate with diamond grooves on attached to the longer fixed jaw. I just unscrewed it and screwed it onto the moving jaw to get clamping up to 1/4" of the blade.

I would be dubious in eating bees in China as they used so much pesticide that they killed off all the bees in the fruit growing areas, they now have to pollinate the trees by hand using brushes! Looking at that plate, they seem to be, Bee larvea. Of course Royal jelly is used in face creams and other cosmetics as a rejuvinator. and I know some beekeepers eat it as they find it! The honey is fine for me I think.
