I have a wm18 milling machine. Recently the tooling has become difficult to free from the morse taper. It used to take a slight tap with a hammer to free the tooling. Now I am having to give it a bit more than I like to free the tooling. As I only really use a collet chuck and various drill chucks I am thinking of leaving the collet chuck in place and fitting a drill chuck with a parallel adaptor, thereby not needing to remove anything from the morse taper.

          Hi Bri.

I have the WM16; sounds like you are tightening the draw bar up fairly tightly. You only need to hand push the tapers together to fit, then I only snug up the draw bar max' 1/8 turn, if that, I then find it is easier to use the top hat to release the drawbar without having to resort to using the potential to kinetic energy converter.

          George.

Try checking for dirt or swarf on the male and female tapers. Hard to see inside the spindle, so give it a good clean with a toothbrush, or a brass brush. You might be able to feel particles stuck inside with a finger.  The problem may be dirt stopping the tapers from gripping properly, forcing you to overtighten the drawbar, and making the chuck hard to release.

This would appear to be exactly the same topic/thread as this ***THREAD*** perhaps the moderators could concatenate them.
