Some versions of the mini-lathe (like my son's Warco for instance, which I believe to also be a Real Bull machine) don't have friction springs on the dials, and it sounds like yours is made this way. The only way to reset the dials is to loosen the grub screw in the dial. Unfortunately the dials may also be responsible for limiting backlash, in which case it will be necessary to retighten the screw once it has been reset.
The whole thing is a pain in the neck (or possibly the other end of the spine), especially if you find the screw is at the bottom when you want to adjust it.
