I have an bought an unfinished Universal pillar tool to complete.

Most of the main work is done just needs handles etc. to complete.

The base appears to be an earlier clamp type with a slot using a bolt to clamp the upright rather than later type using a draw in brass plug for the clamp.

The book only shows the later type.

What thread was used on the earlier clamp?

        Ken

I'm sorry to say Ken that, although I made a pillar tool, (many years ago!) the fixing was not the clamp type you describe. Even then I'm afraid I cheated and the column is fixed by a thumbscrew tapped into the side of the base. My only justification is that it is effective and has withstood the test of about 40 years of use! Thankfully GT did not see it !

I'm hope that you too will find the tool useful.

You may like to look HERE where there is another build of the tool and, who knows, a mail sent there may get an answer to your question

          Regards

GHT's original design of this tool shows the base using the slotted clamp on both versions but most people fit it with the draw clamp. The older book "Building the UPT" says 1/4" whit or BSF….which thread depended on what you had in stock.

              Or you could use M6…

Not if the casting is already threaded wink 2

And was it? OP didn't say. If it is, easiest thing to do is take it to a decent fastener supplier and ask to try out the bolts you think it might be to find one that fits.

                    Thanks for all the help.

It was already threaded and 1/4" Whitworth did the trick.
