      Gentlemen,

To make the previously mention rollers, I need to slice 25mm thick pieces of brass/bronze of 95mm diameter from a lump which is approx 8 inches long, I have a bandsaw type powered hacksaw which cuts steel like a hot knife through butter but it is struggling to cut this material, the blade is 24 tpi does it need to be a courser blade, maybe 12 or 14 tpi.

Needs to be sharp, if you have used the blade on steel etc before it may have just taken the edge off the teeth. Definately the 12tpi on that sort of thickness of material.

24 is definitely too fine…..I bet the teeth gullets are clogging up?

The lower the tpi the smaller the number of teeth on the material and this results in a higher pressure at the cutting edge. For 95mm diameter you want a small tooth count, a 6/10 vari pitch may be a good buy for these sizes.

                Gentlemen,

Thank you, you have confirmed my thoughts, its something I've not had to think about for a while. A trip to the saw doctor this week me thinks to get some blades made.

                  HI

                  I rather like starrett bi-metal vari-pitch blades,

There should be a saw sharpening service near you that supplies them.

                  Regards

I don't have a metal cutting bandsaw Martin – just a rather nice old (woodcutting) INCA 260 that I'm very fond of.

However, I buy my all bandsaw blades from Tuff Saws (I keep about six different blade types) – where the quality and service is very good and the prices quite reasonable. So if I had a metal cutting saw – I'd certainly get my metal blades from them too. They make everything to order and it's delivered within a day or two. A small UK company that is good to be able to support is another bonus!

They have a very informative website, where there is ample advice on blade types, their uses and selection.

This page would probably be very helpful to you:

                    https://www.tuffsaws.co.uk/index.php?route=information/information&information_id=28

Usual caveats – I've no connection to Tuff Saws other than being a very satisfied customer etc.

                    Regards,

                      Thanks all,

I rang a local saw repair company and they can make blades for me, I just need to remove the current blade so they can get the length, this will happen Wednesday as I have a part time job this and tomorrow afternoon.

Like you I get all mine from Ian at Tuffsaws and could not agree more great service and if you have a problem or need a saw for a certain job a phone call and all is answered. You may need to phone a couple of times as he is possibly doing something noisy and can't hear the phone

                          Gentlemen,

I've lived in a village near Bedford for thirty years and today I went to a company I've never visited before called Bedford saw and tool Co, its a family run business and they were very helpful indeed and I am collecting two new blades tomorrow.

If that's the place I'm thinking of (past the hospital and on the right… squat building) then i recall my dad taking a handsaw in about 60yrs ago…Of course my old man insisted on a lesson so he could do it himself next time.

Both my folks have now passed away and I sold the family home last year but remembered the building when i drove past.

                              pgk,

That's the one, I've always driven past it but have never been inside, they are a wealth of information and have some nice stock on show, one thing I notice is clock workings that you can build your own bodies for, having seen one with the the mechanical's on show I can feel a project coming along smiley
