All, for a given configuration (eg DCMT, DCGT, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 radius) are inserts supposed to maintain centre height if you swap them in the same tool holder?

So if for example I went from a 0.8 radius DCMT tip, to a DCGT 0.2 radius, would the centre height change?

Just wondered if it was part of some standard or not.

      Thanks.

The tool height should remain the same but the tool offsets will be changed by the different tip radius, so be aware that if changed during a cut the tool position (Z and X) will need changing to suit.

            OK that's fine. Thanks.

I wouldn't be changing it during work on a single workpiece, but I do change them when changing materials eg cast iron, steel, aluminium or brass. It's obviously a benefit to not have to reset the tool height just because a different insert has been fitted. I'd not noticed a particular issue when doing this, but just wondered if it was a standard, or if I'd just been lucky.

I have noticed a very slight change when going from **MT to **GT ( pip left when facing) but as I tend to have dedicated tool holders in their own QCTP holder it does not crop up very often only if say I need a particular tool to access a part.

As Jason says sometimes a pip may be left, this can be the tool is a tad low or maybe if changing from an 02 to an 08 insert the tool will need to be moved more in the X axis to cut across the centre.
In your example going from 08 to 02 means you may possibly damage the tip when facing if you use the same X reading for facing, the cutting edge will be subjected to upward revolving forces when the cutting edge passes centre.

That's really what I was asking for – facing mainly. If I set the height perfectly for one tip, and swap it, I suppose I have to re-centre it then.

Only if the inserts are varying thickness, not because of the change of tip radius.

The tip radius changes the amount of movement needed to cut to the centre of the work, larger radius insert requires more travel.

                      I know, but that's what I'm asking.

The tip radius changes the length, but that's not relevant for me because I'm doing manual work and measuring as I go.

However, the tip height is what I'm asking about – because that'll always affect facing or turning operations to a degree. setting tool height is trial and error for me, so if I knew that all inserts were made to a height standard, then I could swap them and not worry about re-checking and re-adjusting my tool holders.

If you use the same make and type of insert they will be the same thickness so no centre adjustment should be needed, however as Jason suggests if going from –GT to –MT there may be some difference.

How do you confirm the tool is at centre height ?
