If UK – but refer to posting by Rik Shaw above at 18:01:37 suggesting French origin:

The headcode the locomotive is carrying: two white diamonds, one centrally, one on right upper position would conform with a LSWR locomotive routed:

Salisbury, Southampton West & Portsmouth via Netley.
      Dorchester & Bournemouth Central.
Waterloo & Virginia Water, via Main line

      Refer No:24 here: **LINK**

However the locomotive appears to be additionally carrying a single lamp in the left upper position.

(May indicate number 44 on the schema.)

Further to my earlier posting don't think that Highland Railway used 'routing indicators' of this type.

Might be worth considering LSWR locomotives??

The large cab-front 'look-outs' are quite distinctive, and the lining appears to be a lighter colour surrounded by a darker colour. The boiler hand-rail running over the top of the smokebox-front and sand-boxes built into and ahead of front driving splashers might help identification. Certainly looks like a 4-4-0 wheel configuration.

      Regards, Phil

      GOOD GOD MAN.

You need to get out more.smiley

        Hello Mr Stevenson,

        Have just returned from 'out'.

Peeing down 'out', = absolutely soaked. Grossly overrated so far as I am concerned.

        *chuckles*

        Regards, Phil.

Just after the E,C.B there appears tobe the numbers 35, and there maybe something in front of the letters.

In the early days of film camera, Kodak had one known as the "Autographic"(I'v got my Grandfathers one), it has a little door on the back, and a little scriber, the idea was that when you took the photo you opened the door, and using the scriber, labled the picture, this came out similar to the marks on the above photo.

Played with a few Filters in photoshop and the B could also be 'R', 'P' or 'n' Eastern Counties Railways perhaps?

              Ian and Ed

Many thanks for the input … this could turn into an interesting puzzle

We all remember Antonioni's film 'Blow Up' dont we !

Ian: I'm pretty sure that the writing on the negative would be ink, rather than the pressure effect of an Autographic stylus … There are quite obvious blobs visible within the lines.

Ed: I would certainly accept R as a possibility

If anyone would like a copy of the .psd file of that crop to play with, just send me a PM with your eMail address.

I tried multiple ways of processing it. I think it is E.C.R and that the 'numbers' are an artefact.

Me too [hence the reference to Blow Up]

A bit of Googling came up with a possible matching loco. 4-4-0 Adams 460 class.
