Does anyone know of a steel supplier in the Peterborough area that I can call into and collect what I need. That is, EN1A round and square bar in various sizes.

It makes it very expensive when the carriage costs are almost as much as the cost of the bar itself, due to the weight of the stuff. Oh for the days when I was in work and could half inch waste bar ends.

I don't know your area so can't help. I, and I dare say a lot of us are in the same boat as you.

The best I can suggest is save up a bit and buy from here

          http://www.ebay.co.uk/sme/so.html?_sid=2048038&_soffid=5&_ssn=maccmodels&_sme=Free-delivery-on-orders-over-70&_seedid=360524527486&_sacat=11804&_pgn=2&_skc=50&rt=nc

          Or here

There may be others ? I have no connection with either but I have had very good service from both.

There's the Midland show coming up, that's not far from you ?

          All the best, John

Try finding a local engineering/fabrication firm. They will no doubt have off cuts you can have for a small contribution to their tea fund.

I have a friendly fabrication firm near me, they deal with mild and stainless as well as non ferrous stuff.

Try Mylers steel in Bedford..They used to do smallish bits for me..Macays of East Road Cambridge will do almost anything including machining and very helpful..Also Smithsof Sratton Park( South Biggleswade) used to advertise they would always help Model Engineers..Better check to see if they still do..Macays best..

A1 Steel are in Saville ROAD, Westwood, not far from the A47, on the western side of the city.

B & M Steel, (Barclay and Mattheison) are on the eastern side of the city, not far from Oxney Road.

Take your choice, Both are quite helpful, although I prefer B & M,despite being on the opposite side of town.

Since you seem to be in the Peterborough locality, have you thought of joining the Peterborough Society of Model Engineers? You would get a lot of help and advice if you need it. Look at their website!
