would you say this is good value for money its from a steel stockist in Liverpool all bright bar all for £20

2ft of 12x50mm flat

 3ft of 25mm round

4in of 65mm x 65mm sq

6in of 50mm x 75mm  flat

Maybe it is, if you can stop it going rusty before you use it…

 

I haven’t used anything that big (except the 25mm round) in 4 years.

              Compared to metal super markets prices I just paid for less bright bar of similar sizes it is excellent value if you have a use for it.

well the 25mm round bar is for some dumbells i’m makeing and the 12×50 is for the bracket on the tailstock turret in this months MEW i no its only 68mm long but the steel i got were off cuts they dont cut peaces off off cuts. and the blocks were because i’m a magpie

I would say that it is a very reasonable price, but considering only a few years ago you would have found it in a scrap bin and had it for free

Hi Trevor,

               It looks good value to me. Would you be prepared to say which stockist you used as I need to buy some 2 mm sheet for a furnace I am building and some bar about 25mm x 10mm to make tongs to lift the crucible.

I don’t know the price of bright bar, never seen any for a long time. Black bar, hot rolled, last year was about £1000 a tonne for small quantities (less than a tonne) which I think is outrageous, considering they can’t sell the stuff. 20x 20 bar about £3 / metre. PS this is in N. Scotland.

                     I phone them when the weather gets better. I need to buy a 2 M x 1M

sheet of 1.6 or 2mm steel. I will have to cut this to size outside my workshop hence the need for better weather.

ok les i forgot to say ask for off-cuts first there at the back of the place. i dont no about sheet but theres a few steel stockist around there.

Well yesterday I paid £10 for a piece of 3mm mild steel, 11″ x 9″ from Metal Supermarket, and that was an offcut. So I think you had a pretty good buy. I’m always tempted to walk out, but the alternative is to buy by mail order, pay a fiver post and packing, and then wait a week for it.

Metal Supermarket is handy but I have found that they are enforcing their minimum order policy which is £10. Thats probably why you paid that amount for the plate. I find its worth asking when buying from them if I am being charged the tenner because of the above policy.  Last time I was there I was being charged £10 for a bit of 2″ dia ali 3″ long, I ended up with that bit and some 1 3/4″ and 1″ dia, both 6″ long for the same price

I didn’t know they had a £10 minimum policy. Now I understand what I thought was the blokes impressive mental agility when he said, “It’s £8.51 plus VAT, that’ll be ten quid mate”.
