Starter/Stock pack of metal bar.

Is it possible to purchase a stock/starter pack of round bar, ideally a mix of alu, steel and brass, short lengths say 6 or 12 inches.

Just wondered if any supplier does this.

I have not seen a "starter pack" of metal bars. When I first set up my home workshop, I bought a selection of different size steels and still have some of them. (Never had a use for some sizes after 5 years and a waste of money). It is better to buy the sections that you need for a project as you need them. But if I need some 25×5 flat bar x 200 long, (as an example). I will buy 1 or 2 meters and keep the remainder as stock, knowing that it is a size that I use.

Metal supplers often have off-cuts which are sold at a reduced price. Also second hand steel merchants and ebay are a source of cheap materials.

Is there not a nearby model engineering society you could join ?
Other members may be able to supply you with small lengths while you get started and recommend sources of material – however you will soon need a small bandsaw (eg the cheapie sold by Chester tools (+ others) this will allow you to buy longer lengths of stock sizes eg 3m length of say 1″, .75″ and 0.5″ round + square bar (free cutting EN1 at least at my small supplier seems more readily available in old imperial sizes) – if you buy eg ?100 worth of metal + collect yourself they will usually chop into 1.5m length easily carried in a car – work out what flat stock you want for a project and buy this at same time – buying very short lengths + the high postage cost is generally not a good idea unless you know exactly what you want it for – again locally steel is cheaper than ali but that may well be what the yard supplies most of – brass is even more expensive.

He sells single material packs – see his catalogue – but Rob (think that's his name) made me up a mixed bundle when I started. Different materials, profiles, etc.

He was very helpful, plenty of advice.
