      Ladies & Gentlemen

Sometime in the last few years I saw an article in MEW with plans and notes for the construction of a stand that would hold a Dremel type tool horizontally.

I have attempted to use the Index but without success

Can anybody remember, please, if such an article did appear (or am I going senile?) and if so, in which issue?

I have a Black & Decker Wizzard tool and discovered yesterday that the thread under the nose cap is 3/4 BSF.

If senility has hit me, can anybody suggest, please, where I might have seen the article/plans elsewhere?

      Very many thanks

      MC Black

The toolstock adaptor for my Dremel is very simple and made from a scrap piece of aluminium.

The plastic threaded sleeve that the grinder screws into is made from one of the unused accessories that came with the grinder. Therefore did not have to make a thread, just bore a hole in the adaptor to hold it.

I have made a simple holder for my Dremel clone tool, there is a description here. I use it as a small grinder or to drill small holes in work held in the lathe chuck.

Mike Cox wrote an article illustrating the use of a flexible drive from the dremel as this is much easier to hold rigid in a tool post – it might be on his website as well

Was the MEW article you were looking for David Haythornthwaite's in MEW 172? You can download several of his articles from here.

The Dremel Nose thread is 3/4" x 12 ( corrected by MOD). A 3/4" BSF tap works fine.

The thread is moulded and quite slack so it is difficult to determine whether it is meant to be 55 or 60 degrees. I'm a bit surprised that it is not an American standard but UNC is 10 tpi and UNF is 16tpi.

                      Stay well,

                      Rod

This is my somewhat over-engineered but rigid Dremel toolpost holder:

Unless the thread is something peculiar to Dremel (and the clones), I think 3/4 BSF is a good bet.

I am the proud owner of a 3/4 x 12 BSF tap (inherited from my late father who worked on Architectural Ironwork before WWII).

But what's the Tapping Drill, please?

Lots of www pages suggest 16.75mm but Tubal Cain (in his WPS book) says the GP size is 43/64.

The table at the back suggests that 16.75mm would be more than 80% engagement.

43/64 seems much easier (and is almost 17mm – a more common size).

With best wishes and thanks again.

A little search on the web suggests that the official size is 3/4" x 12 UN so it is a 60 degree thread.

I can't remember what size hole I made but I certainly didn't have a drill of anything like the right size so I bored it in the lathe, roughly screw cut and then followed through with the tap. A 60 degree male thread in a 55 degree threaded hole is likely to be a bit sloppy anyway so if I were doing it again I would go for 80-90% engagement to start with and see how it goes. You're unlikely to break the tap wink
