Wow. That bench top must have been empty before the unpacking. How did you manage that?

Clearly, you are going to set up a second workshop in the back of the Scooby.

Did ARC do a pre delivery prep on the mill ? It looks pretty clean and fully assembled, although we can only see the top half .

When i got my X2 it took half a day just to get the grease and wax paper off it then i had to fit the handles etc.

Hey Jason. Is there a 12.3 mm drill bit in this lot.?

If so you had better check it's tolerance with that 150 mm ruler. devil

Still dripping in chicken fat just like it left the factory. There is nothing to assemble except putting a couple of handles onto the handwheels which are reversed so they don't get knocked off.

Nick I'm not measuring the drill as that is not important, it's the hole that matters and there is a set of miniature bore gauges in there somewhere. Anyway steel rules are not for me, you should know us site boys are happiers with an old tape measuredevil

I still haven't quite finished rearranging my workshop for the SC4. the stand fitted, but I couldn't get the gearbox cover open, so I had to shorten and move my milling bench. I then had to move the mill on the bench. Then I had to move my vice. But it still clashed with the power feed, so I had to move the vice again. Which meant I had to reinforce another bench. Then I had to move my 'surface plate'. I also had to remove one shelf and put up three new ones. At least the shaper was able to stay in it's original place, but I now have a bandsaw that has no permanent home.

Friend of mine was once asked to provide a copy of the calibration cert for his tape measure, and no I'm not joking. Although I'm a great believer in QA, this sort of thing shows why you shoudn't give the job of QA man to your least competent employee.

                                          Hey Jason

                                          "I keep a tidy workshop "

But think of all the excitement and entertainment that you are missing!!

For ( many? of ) the rest of us every trip to the workshop is an adventure. We go out there and need a "widget" to carry out the work but can't remember just where we saw it last. There follows a search through all the likely …then increasingly unlikely places – leading us through a comfortable adventure by revisiting all our previous workshop experiences. Many a happy hour can pass this way and, by the time we are through, we have completely forgotten what we went in there for anyway! Never mind the next time we go out there for a different purpose altogether it is sure to turn up…….. then we will think " now I was looking for that the other day – I wonder what I needed it for……..?

When BS 5750 was first introduced (Now ISO 9000 etc)it was not unusual to expect calibrated tapes in the building industry. Bit silly really as a proportion the operatives could not use a tape in the first place.

There was a big drive to get firms quality registered in the construction industry but I see little evidence of it now.

Ah! So its not just me that works in "Rubik's Cube" conditions.

At least it forces changing the habits of a lifetime, to be tidy. Occasionally, there is the thrill of finding something that you had forgotten that you had, or where it had been put.

You tend to remember which pile it goes in, or was last seen. IF I can remember; increasingly difficult these days.

Either that or my 6 inch rule walks about the shop when my back is turned.

Talking of which, I know of an instance where a calibration certificate was requested for a 6 inch rule. (Maybe a HSE escapee?)

Too true! But since the workshop has extended into the rest of the house it begins for me every time I step through the front door.
