The problem with gloves is the temptation to pick things up before they have cooled down…

Neil – I thought that was part of the point of wearing gloves??

I agree with Duncan's comment about always wearing cotton overalls (comment 12/12/16 18:55:03).

Cotton boilersuits – never ones containing man made fibres – were worn for a reason in ship's engine rooms on both motor and steam powered ships. There was always a chance, albeit quiet a small one, that an accident might occur in an engine room and a 'pure' (as it were) cotton white boiler suit was considered the safest material to wear.

I wear gloves while welding obviously, but often when soft soldering too, but the various comments on holding the silver soldering rods with pliers, mole grips or by other means, or just using long rods and discarding when getting short, hold merit in silver soldering without gloves, providing one is not tempted to pick up hot bits after with bare fingers of course!

A simple heat shield on whatever you use to hold your silver solder protects the pinkies from the glare. Just a small tube through a tinplate disc is useful.

Our foreman, teaching two of us youngsters how to silver solder pushed his flat cap up with the hand holding the torch, Robert said " did you burn your head"  with a scowl the foreman said "WATCH" so we shut up and he finished the lesson.

Next day sitting down to tea break, five of us in the engineers shop, old Willie say's as the foreman takes his flat cap off, " what you done to your head" it was covered with a large piece of lint! with his famous harmless scowl he said "burnt it"

                Be careful.
