      Morning all,

I’ve got a Sieg mini mill SX2.7 that’s developed a problem, when I use the fine feed knob on the front of the machine to lower the quill to touch off on something the quill suddenly jumps back up a millimetre or so. I’ve not stripped it down yet to have a look thought I’d ask first. Thanks

Don’t know this particular mill but the fine feeds typically are a worm drive onto the coarse feed arbor. It may be the worm is not properly engaged with its wheel or if plastic is damaged.

When you engage the fine feed make sure that you unfold the handle from the knob in the middle of the quill spider. If you just do it up using the round part of the handle it may not tighten up enough.

There is a bit of backlash going from winding down to winding up but should not jump if feeding in the same direction

Ok thanks, I’ll have a look at it.

I’ll try the handle, I’ve had it about 4 years and if I honest I’ve never used it! If that doesn’t work I’ll strip it down. Thanks

I will stand to be corrected but isn’t the fine adjustment knob engaged when you tighten the adjuster in the centre of the course adjustment handle? That is just tightening 2 tapers together to act like a clutch, stripping and cleaning should resolve any slippage.

Yes that is the one I have suggested Andy ensures is fully tightened by flipping out the lever  and using that so you can tighten more than if just gripping the round black knob.

It drives two ball bearings outards via a rod and another ball so make sure  you don’t drop them into the head
