Qualter and Smith hacksaw

I work as a volunteer on the East Lancashire Railway in the Signal Engineering Department.

One of the machines in our workshop is a Qualter and Smith power hacksaw with approximately a 6in capacity.

Unfortunately it is in definite need of some attention, but not having a workshop manual, I am concerned to start to dismantle the hydraulics without knowing quite what I should be checking.

Has anyone got a copy of the workshop manual that they could copy for me; that I could copy or that I could purchase?

Richard there's a section on the lathes.co.uk (where else!!) on Qualter and Smith band and power hacksaws. Tony also states that parts lists and handbooks are available, so might be worth an e-mail or phone call.

Successfully ordered the manual, parts list and electrical details, not cheap but it will be worth it to get this machine back in running order.

Hi Kevin,

Sorry I forgot to reply to your question.

We bought the manual and all it says (if I remember correctly) is to raise the arm to the maximum and have the blade as far back towards the machine as possible before filling the cylinder.

I have to say that we haven't fully filled the cylinder, and the machine works perfectly. If we have a problem it is that in a workshop with a range of abilities, it is essential to ensure that the oil can containing the 80W-90W EP oil is not used as general machine oil!
