On my Ml7 I can lift the tailstock chuck up and down. It looks as if the tailstock barrel is loose in the casting. Is there anything I can do. New metric barrels are available.

      Terry.

The (Old) Myford cure for this was to rebore the tailstock and fit a replacement oversize barrel.

Rebore the tail stock with same lathe, also use the boring bar between spindle and steady rest. The tail stock hooked to the carriage. Then you can bore the tail stock and fit to the new barrel.

My old Super7 tailstock has a bit of play too – but I'm not sure I'd rebore the whole thing and fit a new barrel. At the rate I work – that would take forever!

I'm sure I've seen somewhere (?) that someone with a similar problem simply bored out the front of his tailstock nose for a short distance and then fitted a brass insert that was itself then bored out to fit the original barrel snugly. He said it worked just fine – but I cannot remeber where i saw it – sorry.

So I think that's the route i'll take eventually too but it's somewhere down a long list of Round Tuits…..

              Regards,

              IanT

                Hi,

Check also the barrel key (pn: 70/1506)

It surely can't be worn to the extent that it would need reboring – could the majority of the wear be in the barrel itself?

If the bore is worn, it might be possible to ream it back to parallel and then hone to final size and smoothness. Making a new barrel should be OK with a little care.

                  Martin.

Pierre, The barrel key only stops the rotation of the barrel and plays no part in the fit or otherwise of the barrel within the tailstock casting.

IanT, The ring solution will reduce the sloppy movement, but if the rest of the tailstock bore is also worn (perhaps to a lesser extent) then this would only be a partial solution.

the fit of my mini lathe tailstock has always been the one thing I'm not happy with, but i put up with it as locking it repeatably brings it dead to centre height.

I keep meaning to counterbore the tailstock and fit a bush – I was going to use CI, not brass. Hmm, just realised I have a shortend just the right size with a blind hole in it already

My barrel looks preety bad, it is getting difficult to read the graduations. So I have lept in and ordered a new metric one from the factory (that was). I can allways fit a dro so I know what I might be doing. Fitting a new bush at the front sounds like a good idea also.

                        Terry.

Hi all, the new barrel arived this morning. Can't complain about the fast service from the new 21st century Myford dealer. Have put it in this afternoon and what a difference, cannot feel any play at all. Well a bit of wea is expected after 50 years. Thanks again for all your sugestions.

                          Terry.
