Phozi Bronze or Gun metal?

Can someone clarify for me the difference between phosphor bronze and gun metal.

 

I am at the stage of making the boiler fittings for my 4″ Durham. I have plenty of phosy bronze but no gun metal.

Gun Metal is a high lead content bronze. It’s good as a bearing material and machines well but it’s softer and not as tough as PB.

So is phozy better for check valves etc?

From what I can glean from my references, I don’t think that in the absence of any unusual circumstance that one is better than the other for what you want. Both materials in their many and varied forms are recommended for steam fittings. The actual composition of both alloys varies considerably and both can contain lead in various proportions depending on the grade.

Thank you, that will save some money. I like making fittings, as fiddly as they are there is a great satisfaction to making them.
