Another couple of points:
Speed, about 1/4 of that for normal turning.
Steady feed, keep it cutting.
Al said it's like playing with snakes. Well, if you're working with brass it should hiss like one.
Suds or cutting oil for steel, dry for brass, parafin for aluminium.
Minimise overhang and don't use the tailstock centre.
Sorry, that was more than a couple but it's not as difficult as it sounds. Just go for it. Practice first before doing anything critical.
