Painting/Rust prevention

I am having a go at building a 2" Burrell Roller and have a few parts



I intend to clean up some steel parts that are a bit tarnished in my bead blaster.



Some bits like the rolls will ultimately end up painted and some bits won't. I think they all need some kind of protection once cleaned up.



What does the panel think I should use, any recommendations ?



Also while on the subject what kind of paint do folks put on their boilers ?

Any bright work I would just wipe over with an oily rag. Painted items spray with a can of suitable primer. A lot will depend on where you store the engine during construction, I keep the Fowler inside so there is little risk of rusting so everything is bare but if you have to keep it in the workshop then paint oil may be a better option.

BBQ paint works well on the hot bits and you should be able to get the Burrell in the oven to bake it, Halfords also do high temp enamels.

Other half yelped when I mentioned this idea as a perfect solution, then gave me that look that only they can, and said "Don't even think of using MY oven!"

If you have room in the Workshop; try freecycle, you will probably someone wanting to dispose of their old oven "free, for collection".

Ah Chris, problem is, their olfactory ability/skills is/are such, that I would be found out PDQ and then doomed to short rations for eternity, and life is just too short to endure that

Any more items of stove size in workshop will start to cramp my style.

I do, however, have a table top stove/grill for powder coating small items, but haven't sorted out a way for doing bigger ones, yet.

My wife never hears anything during the day as she spends all the daylight hours in the basement.

Note to self , must find out why she has a coffin full of earth down there.

The best rust inhibitor I've used is a product called ACF50 – a bit like WD40 on steroids. It is an oily coating but posses a strong resistance to wiping off (unlike simple oil), and it also actively creeps into crevices and even neutralises existing corrosion. Only a very thin smear of of this stuff is required for effective and lasting protection – the parts are not left dripping in the stuff.
