I am getting a Denford Orac lathe back in working order and I am not sure if the encoder originally fitted to the spindle is satisfactory for use with either Mach3 or Mach4. If the technology is too old then what should I consider as a replacement, preferable still on the spindle rather than belt driven from the spindle.

      Thanks, Mike

We are just using a cheap Omron one from RS, don't have the number handy, the lathe is at work.

You only want one of this and a one slot disc as Mach3 and 4 cannot read a multiline encoder.

I can look the part number up tomorrow if you want ? tried checking past orders on the RS website but it's in a continual loop

            Thanks John,

That would be a great help and from what you say I guessI could use the plain back of the existing disk and just cut a slot. ?how wide a slot?

            Thanks, Mike

On my S7 the disc is about 90mm diameter Ali and the slot about 10 mm wide, but it's pretty uncritical. So the slot sub tends about (10/3×90)x360 = about 13 degrees. If you adjusted the slot width in proportion to your diameter it should behave the same.
