Having a bit of a clear up I thought I would see if anyone knows what this is before I bin/store/repurpose it?

Its been somewhat modified, it had a rudimentary pantograph arrangement attached to the 'saddle' and 'tailstock' but for what for I never found out.

I'm not sure if the original headstock has been cut off or unbolted, but raised 'V' at the back of the bed does not continue past the gap. Its about 350mm long.

Only clue is cast in initial ‘FH’

It looks a very stable bed, with those wide feet, Ian.

I would say the headstock has been unbolted … maybe after whatever accident took that nasty chip off the end.

          Sorry … don't recognise it.

I'm assuming its between about 14" and 18" long?

FH doesn't bring up anything other than a few model numbers.

I would guess its a self-made lathe as although the bed looks well made it might be over-engineered and the very hevy stock plate used for the saddle and tailstock are crude in contrast.

The pantograph may be original as the relatively massive tailstock base is out of proportion to what I would expect. Also the top face of the tailstock does not look like it is designed to have a normal barrel assembly fitted.

So, my guess is that it is a 'special' built for a particular purpose, perhaps it was a small copy turning lathe or even a special for turning convex/concave surfaces?

That said, the well aged and still in good condition base casting could prove the basis of an excellent small lathe.

              Ian,

I think one of these might do it justice

A real shame the headstock is missing, it looks like a substantial micro lathe

Pins for a gap piece are present and what big feet you have grandma!

Looks solid enough to become a micro turret lathe

The original headstock, saddle and the tailstock are missing, the ones in the picture are fabricated from bits of steel plate. The bottom of the gap has been machined flat and the holes drilled to take the pantograph. The original RH support for the leadscrew has been sawn off too.

The casting is substantial for a lathe of that size, I assume the large feet were so that the bed could be 'levelled' to a high tolerance as such wide spacing of the attachment points would allow very fine adjustment.wink

Creating a Mega-FH would be a challenge and not one that I had in mind.

Just realised that I posted this in the CNC machine tool topic category, so some folk might mistakenly got the idea that I wanted to upstage Neil with his Mega Adept!
