Night Classes?

Been Googling for Night Classes in Worcestershire/Gloucestershire and surprised that there aren't any. Is this the case generally around the country? I would like to learn basic lathe work, but other than Axminster, can't see anyone else providing instruction.

Not everything googles! I have just checked my area and get no responses to model engineering classes although I know a local teacher runs them at his school.

Therefore I suggest you ask your local model engineering, model railway, and model boat clubs if they know of any then ring roung tech colleges and schools to see if they do anything.

Think that you will be lucky to find any night classes for model engineering. I expect H&S killed them off oh and money.

We used to have night classes which were part subsidised by the local authority.

Then this Government got into power. I wouldn't say elected.

End of classes.

Here in Scarborough 15 members hire the "Tec" College workshops,together with a member of staff, this years the cost was £1880. 10 evenings before Christmas and 10 after. Perhaps you could do the same.We have been running like this for 6 or 7 years, I collect the money and pay the college.

We are having our annual open evening 2nd July, where there will be a display of what we have been working on this year.Ted

Hmmmm, I think you're one 'government' out, I think you'll find it was actually the previous (Labour) goverment that dumped night classes for mature students. They also decided we didn't need people with higher degrees, so they went too, to a large extent.

No Andrew, I have got the right (very right) one. As the classes were only stopped last year then I can't blame the previous administration.

That seems a pretty fair arrangement. We used to have an evening "class" that gave access to a superb college workshop, with a lecturer and technician, for 2 1/2 hrs a week . The college then decided that ALL courses must bear a proportion of the overhead costs of running the whole college ( heating, lighting administration depreceation etc.etc.) – costs that would be there irrespective of "our" use of the workshop. It became unaffordably expensive. Sad. Now all the knowledge, expertise and resources cannot be tapped and that lovely machinery just sits there idle for most of the time. I know I'm getting old but I've gotta say "Things 'aint what they used to be"!

Frank I do hope you find a course somewhere but I'm not optomistic I'm afraid.

A long time ago there were the summer schools in model engineering held at Loughborough .

Residential , full use of extensive workshops and professional supervision . One week modules officially but at least a few people spent most of the summer there . Additional family members were welcomed for a general holiday .

Perhaps , for now at least , the tech based local evening classes are no more .

How about exploring the possibility of reviving the summer schools under direction of Model Engineer ??

There are still some locations available .

Would be best to look for professional tutoring again as far as possible .
